Getting Your Home Winter-Ready

Published Wednesday, October 8, 2025

(Warminster, PA) – It’s that time of year again when Pennsylvanians start unpacking their sweaters and dusting off their radiators. You might be ready for the colder months, but is your home?

“Preparing the house for fall and winter should be on every homeowner’s yearly checklist,” said Bucks County Association of Realtors® President Frank Blumenthal. “In Pennsylvania especially, the winters can be cold and snowy. Taking some maintenance measures really helps improve the longevity of your home and helps you avoid costly consequences.”

Homeowners should take time to clean their gutters and downspouts, especially once the leaves have finished falling. This prevents blockages and damage. Inspect the roof as well, looking for damaged shingles, leaks, holes, fire hazards, and other issues.

“It gets cold here in the winter, which is why checking your windows and doorways for air leaks is crucial,” Blumenthal added. “Seal all gaps to prevent drafts. This will save you from being cold and save your wallet from higher electricity bills.”

As always, it’s also important for homeowners to check their plumbing and HVAC systems. Take precautions to avoid frozen pipes and tune up the heating. For homes with fireplaces, make sure to follow chimney safety tips to prevent fires. And at any time of year, it’s important for all homeowners to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Outside, remember to trim trees that may pose a risk during winter storms and disconnect garden hoses to prevent freezing. Check driveways and walkways for cracks or damage that may worsen with freeze-thaw cycles as well.

“Preparing your home for each season truly helps it look, feel, and perform its best,” Blumenthal concluded. “Homeowners who take the time to winterize will be safer, feel more comfortable, and save money in the long run.”
